The band formed after its members met while incarcerated at Northern Nevada Correctional Center, roughly 30 minutes outside Reno. There, they bonded over shared interests in low frequencies and homemade gazpacho. Upon release, they began playing together in Reno, quickly establishing a reputation despite having written or released zero songs.

Due to ongoing legal matters in the city of Reno, the members of Electric Celery remain anonymous and perform under the following pseudonyms:

As local demand grew, Electric Celery expanded into the Pacific Northwest and developed a substantial fan base in the Seattle region. In 2025, following a widely attended private concert, core members John Doe, Punky Brewster, and Darlton McSwayne were detained and extradited to Reno on bogus felony agricultural charges. After eight months of incarceration the band was released on house arrest and began recording its first album.

Though legally required to remain within Reno city limits under the terms of their house arrest, Electric Celery continues to exert an improbable influence on Reno, Seattle, and everywhere in between.
